Morgan State University is delivering a modern digital experience for its student and staff with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise switches, WLAN and VoIP systems.
Morgan State University is Maryland’s premier public urban research institution providing a diverse student body with a distinctive educational experience. The campus covers over 143 acres in Baltimore, Maryland. Each year, the university enrolls an average of 7700 students in programs from the baccalaureate to the doctorate. The historic academic institution will soon celebrate its 150-year anniversary.
Student experience, a driving force for changeWith the future of students in mind, Morgan State set a plan to reach beyond its full digital potential with a next generation technology network that would exceed today’s standards for Internet access, mobility, and security on campus. The University was mindful to include students and staff during the input phase of the project to assure their needs were addressed.
The resulting goals were to provide:
- Students, faculty, and staff with a faster network with much better coverage for mobile devices, both in-class and across the campus.
- Faculty and staff with a high-quality VoIP network.
- Morgan State also sought to simplify management for the IT staff and reduce maintenance costs by unifying disparate networks.
Bold Advances for the New Network
The new Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise network is providing vital support for teaching, learning and research. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch® dual core routed LAN network increased capacity from 2 Gbps to 80 Gbps, providing ample bandwidth for today’s needs and the future growth of users, applications and devices. The solution also has the capability to support high-quality delivery of real-time applications, including the newly deployed VoIP communications network based on Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX® Enterprise.
The network provides an additional layer of safety for the campus. It supports an increased number of high-resolution cameras to provide instant access to campus security personnel to assist in emergency situations.
The new network enables the expansion of online courses and degrees, providing more flexibility for the students and increased enrollment and associated tuition for the University. In 2016, 5.8M students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions participated in online courses.*
Dr. Adebisi Oladipupo, CIO, Morgan State University, said, “The Next Generation Network project is an enabler of Morgan State University’s strategic goals and its mantra…Growing the future and leading the world. This ultra-fast and scalable network will more than adequately support excellent teaching, transformative learning, and innovative research that are hallmarks at Morgan State University. Truly, the future has an address and it is here at Morgan State, where we are leading the world with another milestone project.”
