Swiss care facility Diakonie Bethanien makes a sound investment in Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise converged network infrastructure.

Social and community healthcare provider Diakonie Bethanien has selected a complete Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise voice and data IT infrastructure for its new multi-purpose facility in Zurich-Altstetten. The network ensures that the provider’s facilities, including the 87-room Placid Hotel, conference center, restaurant, palliative care unit, child day care services, and office spaces,  all receive uninterrupted and reliable network service.

Diakonie Bethanien, which has been caring for people for over a century, required a network and communications solution to seamlessly deliver services across its latest state-of-the-art facility. The advanced converged network solution from ALE, operating under the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise brand, supports 24/7 priority services including nurse call systems, care systems, and Wi-Fi telephony in the care units. The network also provides a first-class hotel experience with easy connectivity for multiple guest devices, access to hotel services, and high speed internet.

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Business Partner ITRIS Informatik AG deployed the network based on the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch® and Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess® families to deliver a fast, highly available LAN and WLAN. The flexible and powerful converged network infrastructure will support the IT needs of Diakonie Bethanien’s business units with advanced network management, analytics capabilities and strict policy-based access rights.

The key was to give the IT department the right analytics capabilities to monitor bandwidth and key traffic patterns for proactive optimization of the network. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniVista® 2500 Network Management System is able to provide full visibility and network analytics of the users, devices, and applications from the different departments within a single platform and ensure priority services are never hindered by non-critical network traffic.

In addition, user access to the network and applications is strictly controlled through the ClearPass Policy Management System, which creates and enforces policies that extend across the network to wired and wireless devices so only the users with permission can access specific network resources.
