As a public institution, Mato Grosso State University (Unemat) has been innovating to meet the needs of the state’s residents since its inception in 1978. With a mission to make higher education available to all citizens, the university is committed to excellence in its staff, students and research. Unemat offers 176 graduate and postgraduate courses to 19,000 students over 13 campuses and 34 pedagogical centres. Of its 2,000 employees, there are 1,398 teachers and 603 technicians.

After a thorough analysis of its IT infrastructure, Unemat identified connectivity failures and equipment that could no longer support the growing range of networking traffic. To support its staff in the delivery of high-quality education and offer students reliable access to information, Unemat required a modernised network with robust campus-wide connectivity.

While some government-funded institutions opt for lower-quality technology to minimise spend, Unemat pursued a strategy of achieving return on its investment by opting for the best solution available on the market. Through a bid process, Unemat selected Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise as the best cost/benefit solution on the market. In deploying the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch® 6360 as part of a R$12 million investment in modernization, Unemat was able to improve the quality of broadband internet access across its campuses and support academic initiatives with robust and reliable connectivity and quality. Unemat had full executive support to implement the necessary changes and build a future-proof network.

Having achieved the desired level of excellence with this modernisation project, Unemat is ready to evolve further, based on its values of quality, stability, reliability and constant evolution.
