University of Lampung (UNILA)
A reliable, secure, high performance network addresses staff and student needs.
Sobre o cliente
University of Lampung, (UNILA), is a public university in Indonesia. Based on data from Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2022, initiated by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, UNILA ranks among the top universities in the country, a significant rise in position compared to 2021.

Alcatel-Lucent worked with us to realise our vision of building a network that would improve our profile on the world stage, deliver the QoE and QoS that users demand, and address the influx of BYOD with built-in security.
Challenges
In today’s digital environment, the education sector is challenged to provide universal easy access to the network enabled by best-in-class infrastructure. Universities must be hubs for innovation and latest technology, to ease learning and enable support students and staffs.
Additionally, the growth of IoT devices on campus grows the risk of cyberattacks.
Action
Benchmark tests indicate that Wi-Fi 6 is 40% faster than Wi-Fi 5, with transfer speeds of 1,320 Mbps and 1000% quicker download speeds than the average Wi-Fi 5 download speeds of 119Mbps, including better battery life for connected devices – up to 67%, stronger security with WPA3. With this information in hand, and a goal of improving their standing as an education provider, UNILA initiated a network revitalisation project to improve their digital Quality of Service (QoS) and user experience for both internal (lecturers, students and staffs) and external (other education organisations, local government and international agencies), using Wi-Fi 6 technology.
UNILA worked together with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise to create an always on, scalable, intelligent, easy to manage, resilient and high-performance LAN infrastructure with integrated automation to minimise the IT workload. In addition to the high performance, pervasive Wi-Fi 6, the network delivers easy to manage devices, with connectivity everywhere at an affordable price.
Results
Technical benefits
- A zero trust network security approach provides macro-segmentation (VLAN, VRF, GRE Tunnels, VxLAN) and micro-segmentation, also known as Role-based Access Control (RBAC), implements a User Network Profile (UNP) which is a set of Access Control Lists (ACLs) and Quality of Service (QoS) policies that are applied to the device/user according to the device category or user-role
- A non-proprietary, high performance, highly scalable solution that is IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) compliant
- Centralised management with a single dashboard for wire, wireless and IoT devices
Financial benefits
- Reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) with OmniAccess Stellar WLAN and centralised management system implementation
- Embedded features available on ALE devices, Unified Policy Authentication Manager (UPAM) system for Guest Access authentication and BYOD, with no additional cost for feature and license renewal means less OPEX, and frees up funds for other technology updates
- Lower CAPEX with distributed intelligence solution exclusively available in a best-in-class Wi-Fi future-proofed solution; reducing hardware purchases
- Transparent pricing with products listed in an eCatalogue portal
User experience benefits
- A centralised management system for LAN and WLAN enables wider monitoring to increase performance and QoS. As well, integrated operations and an optimised problem-solving capability increase service availability
- Wi-Fi 6 drastically increases internet speed and reduces latency up to 75% which will address the growing number of users and devices connected to the university network
